Monday Morning Apologist: Dinosaurs Disprove the Bible?

—OBJECTION: The fossil records of dinosaurs—which aren’t mentioned in the Bible—proves the Bible is untrue.

—RESPONSE: Dinosaurs are not irreconcilable with the Bible.  Land animals were created on day six (Gen. 1:23-31). The idea that there could have been mammoth-sized beasts during the early period of human creation is quite conceivable.  That they are no longer present also makes sense without creating a “billions of years” theory, provided that one accounts for worldwide flood (as the Bible describes).  Dinosaurs, though not named as such in Scripture (partly because the word didn’t exist in English prior to the 1800s), are wholly compatible with Scripture.

Moreover, the Bible is true and accurate in all that it seeks to address.  The Bible does not address all matters of life but all matters that the Creator has sovereignly elected for faith, practice, and knowledge of Him.  The Bible, for instance, does not explain nuclear physics, macroeconomics, or mechanical engineering.  That’s likely because such information was more advanced than what the people of biblical times could comprehend in their time AND because the Bible does not seek to explain everything in life that can be explained.

Nevertheless, Job 41 mentions leviathan and, though seemingly aquatic, it seems to have been able to come upon land and was quite large (vv.5-6, 25, & 30). This isn’t a “dinosaur,” but it does seem to speak of a creature that’s distinct from those we know of today. The point is that we cannot force modern interpretive approaches on Scripture, nor can we force the Bible to address things that were never part of its aim to address.

In the end, if you’re aggressively searching out reasons to disprove the Bible, then you’re bound to find something. No, not because the Bible is actually unreliable but because doing so is common to fallen beings—that is, suppress truth in unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18-19).  Rather than following ill-motivated pursuits, I would encourage you to review the many prophecies fulfilled by Jesus (see GotQuestions) and learn more about Him since He, His glory, and His redemption of humanity are the central points of the Bible.
