A couple years ago, I started sharing the “Monday Morning Apologist” posts to my social media account. After some thought the other day, it seemed wise to add it to my blog (though the blog is private at the time of this entry).
An apology (or apologist), in this context, is a defense of something communicated through speech or writing. So, this is not an “apology” in the sense of reflecting remorse for the Christian faith; it’s a response, answer, or defense to objections made against Christianity. The word “apology” is derived from the Greek, ἀπολογία (apologia), and it’s found most notably in 1 Peter 3:15 (NASB):
But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense [ἀπολογίαν] to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.
Additionally, “Monday Morning Apologist” is a nod to the concept of a “Monday Morning Quarterback,” which generally points to a football fan or pundit that has all the winning solutions, especially quarterback play, the day after being on the losing end of the Sunday football game. For me, I use the Lord’s Day (Sunday) to worship and delve into various God-glorifying activities, so Monday was the most logical choice in order to periodically share apologetic insight for the Christian faith. It has a basic outline of objection and response; the same format that Paul uses throughout Romans. Since it’s used for social media, it’s relatively brief, but it’s more than a tweet.
If this is ever made public and you’re able to read it, may God be glorified and you be blessed.
