Monday Morning Apologist: Is Religion is the Real Problem with the World?

-OBJECTION: Religion is the problem with the world. Most wars and evil in history stem from religion.

-RESPONSE: I think I understand what you mean, however, could it be that you’re attributing the problems to the wrong source? This is akin to blaming cars for accidents resulting from drunk driving. Just because people act wickedly in the name of religion (i.e. Christianity) doesn’t make the religion the culprit. Sinful men are, and have always been, the problem. In Mark 7:21-23, Jesus affirms this notion saying evil isn’t merely external; evil comes from the heart of men (v.21).

It’s clear from Scripture that evil men have done evil things throughout history, and sadly, some have done so in the name of “religion.” Yet, such actions—while a turnoff—don’t make the faith invalid. Consequently, if you find that people at a given church assembly aren’t living up to the tenets of their faith, gently and humbly (with grace, as even Christians are imperfect) inquire as to why they behave that way. Often, you’ll find that a Christian assembly is imperfectly striving to live according to Scripture. If it’s an egregious violation and inarguably contradictory to the faith (e.g. affirming sin, advocating hate, robbing church members, not preaching the Bible, etc.), then get as far away as possible. Recognize that such a church is not reflective of all churches and not reflective of Jesus nor the Bible. Instead, find a biblical, Christ-centered, God-exalting, gospel-saturated church to attend where people live sacrificially and point you to the Savior.
