-OBJECTION: There is no God. I’m an atheist.
-RESPONSE: Well, making a bold assertion doesn’t make it true. Consider this: “There is no such thing as air. I’m a fish!?!” You see how that works? To a fish that’s always underwater, the concept of air would be foolish. The same is true for fallen beings born in a state that’s hostile to God. Besides, you’re also making an absolute statement in saying there’s no God. In order for you to be right, you must have absolute knowledge about everything—every place where God could be found, have examined all of it, and conclusively determined that God doesn’t exist. However, in order to believe that there is a God, you need only find a single instance (evidence) in which He exists. Perhaps you’re more agnostic and skeptical than you are an atheist?
Let’s be clear, however. It’s not my true goal to get you to stop saying you’re an atheist. The truth is I want you to find forgiveness and salvation in Christ. There were times in my life where I, too, thought I was skeptical, but in actuality I was dissatisfied with God for not meeting me on my terms, not revealing Himself the way I thought He should have revealed Himself. I wanted God to instantaneously resolve poverty, hunger, and death; show up and do miraculous things so regularly that no one could deny His being; and give me (and others) our desires…as long as it didn’t hurt anyone else. Could that be true for you as well?
Romans 1 makes it clear there are no true atheists, rather there are only those who assent to obvious signs of a Creator and those who rebel. In my former days, I was the rebel, the one who rejected God because He didn’t do things my way. Yet, if He did things my way, He wouldn’t be God, He’d be me, and I make for a very lousy god!
Start small. Look to the historicity of the Bible, then read it. I recommend starting with John after you’ve researched the authenticity the sacred text. I pray that you would find God before it’s too late.
