Monday Morning Apologist: Science Over God/Religion?

—OBJECTION: I believe in science, not religion.

—RESPONSE: I see, so based on your statement you believe religion (i.e. Christianity) is incompatible with science. This could not be further from the truth, although, I don’t really fault you since modern scientists have largely sought and accepted only natural explanations for things discovered in our world (however difficult it may be to draw such conclusions). Despite this, religion, like Christianity, is not incompatible with science.

There is something critical that each of us need to understand: science, true science, must be observable and repeatable (remember the scientific method you learned in school?). Most of what people say is science, like evolution—is not actually scientific fact and can’t be, for millions and millions of years and macro-evolutionary changes are neither observable nor repeatable. Observable and repeatable science is like testing the law of gravity or using Galileo’s falling object experiments to show the rate of falling (acceleration).

Moreover, many of us (like yours truly) are products of a public school system, and despite being well-intentioned, this school system relies on scientific information from those who deliberately seek explanations apart from the Bible or supernatural means. In an effort to be neutral and non-religious, these school systems have wittingly or unwittingly removed valid explanations for why things exist the way they do while placing science and the Bible at odds with each other.

In the end, Christianity and the Bible—two areas that were responsible for most of our scientific advances (see here)—should not be assumed to be mutually exclusive from science. The Christian worldview can and should utilize science, and one doesn’t need to turn off their brain in order to accept the Bible and God of it. No, instead, they simply need a fresh view that’s not hostile to God and allows the Bible’s supernatural explanations to further inform scientific thought.

Check out these links to get information on scientists who believe the Scriptures are true and use their training while considering these truths: Link 1 and Link 2. While creation scientists may be a minority populace in the scientific community, it doesn’t mean they’re wrong. Again, when natural answers are the only ones permissible, then one has already presupposed the absence of an all-powerful, supernatural God. Therefore, in a very godless and naturalistic way, you could summarize that humans with this type of science-only worldview ought to behave as selfishly as possible and live their best life now because there is only nothingness after it (a very bleak and hopeless perspective).

Finally, I’m not here to erase all your scientific concerns (in truth, I’m woefully equipped to do so anyway!). I am here, however, to call your attention back to your Creator and back to the Scriptures and Christ, our only hope. If you’d like more consideration into the Bible so that you, too, may have a “hope that goes beyond the grave” and not exist with a hopeless existence, start by checking this out: NeedGod.com
