Monday Morning Apologist: Are Christians on the Wrong Side of History?

-OBJECTION: You Christians, with your antiquated views on things like abortion and homosexuality, will be on the wrong side of history.

-RESPONSE: You may be right. We may end up on the “wrong” side of history in the sense that the cultural majority may soon ignore such topics altogether. However, what is right and wrong? A secular humanistic worldview, which you seem to espouse, can’t make moral demands and still maintain consistency. To be consistent, such a person can only claim to have preferences and relative morals. Christians who hold to Scripture, in contrast, can have a consistent worldview with an objective morality because it’s rooted in the Creator Who has revealed Himself through the Bible.

Besides that, being on the right or wrong side of history is of little concern to one who has been born again (see John 3). It’s far better to be on the side of the Lord. Just because a given stance is popular, doesn’t make it right (see American chattel slavery. SIDE NOTE: slaves, much like unborn babies, were not considered a person at one time.). God has clearly expressed the definitive wrongness of both abortion and homosexuality in His word (Jer. 7:6, Ex. 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9). Only a twisted and revisionist reading of the text, with no regard for history or context, would allow an individual to ignore God’s perspective on the two subjects.

In the end, it’s not my true objective to move you off of supporting abortion, homosexuality, or any such topic of personal or cultural significance. It’s most important that you recognize the coming judgment of God. One day, all of us will stand before God and answer for our involvement with not only abortion and homosexuality, but a host of sins like sexual immorality, porn use, lying, stealing, faithlessness/unbelief, gossip, failure to love, etc. Now, we can spend our lives ignoring those who call for repentance from sin and belief in the Gospel, or we can take heed, dig into the Scriptures, and respond accordingly. As a minister at my church recently stated, Christians are marked by change. We’re meant to be changed by the power of God, enabling us to live holy lives. Christ died and rose from the dead in order that those who believe and place their trust in Him would not suffer God’s wrath but be united with Him in eternity. Repent and believe. NeedGod.com
