Monday Morning Apologist: Is the Bible Unreliable due to Outlandish, Unbelievable Stories?

OBJECTION: I would believe the Bible if it weren’t for those outlandish stories. Surely, with modern intellectual advances, you don’t really believe those things happened?

-RESPONSE: If you’re referring to things like creation, a great flood, parting of the Red Sea, or Jesus rising from the dead, then “Yes, I absolutely believe those things.” In the interest of brevity, I’ll address the first one: creation.

Which of these two do you think is more logically plausible: (#1) believing that something came from nothing (i.e. spontaneous generation or self-creation), or (#2) that an Eternal, Self-Existent, Supreme, All-Powerful Being created all things?

And if you chose the latter (#2), the Being who’s capable of creating ex nihilo (i.e. from nothing), then everything else in the Script is completely plausible—great floods, the dead being raised, eternity, etc.

I understand your skepticism. Modern thought and secular humanism does not leave much room for God. For if God is real and the Bible is real, then it means human beings are subject and accountable to Him, which is often the last thing sinful beings want. The God of the Bible declares through the Genesis author, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Gen. 1:1). I believe those words. Before our world existed, God has always been. This same God sets forth morality and boundaries for humanity because of our inclination to sinfully rebel against His created order.

One of us is right about God, the Bible, creation, etc., and one of us is wrong. I pray you sincerely investigate these matters now before it’s too late. We’re dealing with matters of eternity, matters that are too important to passively accept or reject. Please find faith God’s precious provision to save you. NeedGod.com
