—OBJECTION: Give me surefire, absolute proof of God’s existence—not your Bible—then I’ll consider believing.
—RESPONSE: Okay, let’s consider the sun, clouds, and the earth. While man is an intelligent being, capable of great discovery, he is not almighty. He doesn’t know everything. What man does know is that there are things existing which he didn’t create, and those things allow for his continued existence.
As a nod to black theologians in history, I’ll reference the words of Charles O. Boothe who said this regarding the nature of God: “A human track in a desert would be to me conclusive evidence that a human foot had trodden that desert. Thus Paul argues that the things which are seen and handled are proof of the unseen things” (Plain Theology for Plain People, 2017, pg. 5).
There’s your proof apart from the Bible—it’s all around you. You only need eyes to see or the ability to feel things like the warmth of the sun. All of nature testifies of this Creator.
I know you wanted this apart from the Bible, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t share the fact that the Bible also supports the idea that God is clearly seen in nature. Romans chapter 1, verse 20, states rather succinctly, “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (emphasis mine).
Look up. Look around. You know there’s something bigger than you, and you don’t need to conjure up something in your head in order to know more about Him. SImply pick up your Bible, read it (I recommend starting with the Gospel of John), learn the good news of the cross/resurrection, and find other solid Christians with whom you can assemble and learn more about Jesus. It’s that simple.
